Enjoyable read. I feel you are bringing anthropological wisdom to a phenomena that anthropology has had a very hard time tackling. Placing shamanism in a global cultural context is important; shamanism in not an artifact of the past - but something dynamic, flexible, human and not at all static/homogenous. Thanks

Hi steve. Thanks for this post.
Surely the art and practice of the shaman is inherent in all humans yet needs to be unlocked beyond conditioning. I agree steve this characterization of the SSC as exclusive to shamans is ridiculous. Just as the rhizhome metaphor is said by D & G to give rise to novel evolutions, the basis of the rhizohme its substance and mechanisms of action are the same-please someone correct me if I'm wrong. I argue there is a common basis of operation of consciousness that can be learnt by anyone to access certain states of mind that are useful for healing etc, yet some people are more inclined to them and better at utlizing those states than others.
Ciao Jean

The way I understand it the individual(shaman) has an intention they keep in their awareness, they also retain an awareness of the anchor (drumming for instance) and they (somehow) relinquish temporarily a big chunk of the 'consensual reality' beliefs about what is possible & what has power or what things are made of - and perhaps what their own identity and power is - thus allowing themselves to be in a relaxed and perhaps less-conditioned or pre-conditioned state. But I am a yoga teacher- yoga talks about conditioning. Does it apply here? It is difficult to precisely express but I have pretty clear upper & lower world dreams (I had a sleep disorder & didn't stay fully asleep) . WDB

Thank you for the kind words. I would like to learn more about the paper you are writing. What are the differences? Why would one enter a shamanic state?

I am currently writing a paper about the differences between shamanic and ordinary states of consciousness and why one would entering the shamanic state.

I find your thoughts to be very thought provoking. I have never thought much about she shamanic state being more of a title as opposed to an actual way of being. Very interesting.
