Paracelsus said long ago that it is the dose that makes the poison. I think that we may be talking about dose here. DMT appears to be present endogenously in relatively small amounts. Small amounts of aspirin have all sorts of beneficial effects; too much can be toxic; and even small amounts can be dangerous under certain circumstances -- before surgery, for example. As far as I know, most substances that we ingest do not interact with DNA at all. Substances that can have effects on DNA would presumably be mutagens. Of course, to the extent that we are, in some extended sense, products of our DNA, then everything we ingest interacts with our DNA, sometimes -- in the case of allergens, for example -- dramatically.

Steve, I have a question here. Let's see if I can come to clarity about it... If DMT is within us cellularly, and it has no negative side- or aftereffects, as we know from ayahuasca ingestion (unless ayahuasca contains a natural antidote quite apart from the DMT), then do you think we can conclude that intoxicants that are physically destructive act in that way because they are counter to the grain of our DNA (Sanskrit, they are pratiloma), whereas DMT based compounds and neurotransmiters such as ayahuasca do not act destructively because they flow with ane even enhance what is within our system altready, that they flow with the grain of our DNA (Sanskrit: they are anuloma)? Thanks.
